Understanding Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences in Residential Childcare and Supported Accommodation

This course is designed to strengthen knowledge, confidence, and practice in understanding trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) within residential childcare and supported accommodation. It recognises that the children and young people we care for have often experienced complex and repeated adversity, which can impact how they think, feel, behave, and relate to others. Rather than focusing solely on behaviour, this course supports staff to explore what sits beneath it, developing a deeper awareness of how trauma shapes responses to everyday situations and interactions.

Through this learning, staff will begin to understand the importance of consistency, relationships, and emotional safety in supporting recovery. The course explores how trauma can affect trust, identity, self-worth, and regulation, and why some young people may struggle to engage with boundaries, routines, or support. It also highlights the crucial role staff play in creating environments that feel safe, predictable, and nurturing, even when young people present with behaviours that can be challenging or difficult to manage.
